Malik Beasley’s 2018 Off Season Development Plan

Targeted Areas

- Shooting
- Finishing
- Close Out Reads (Dare you vs. Oh Shit)
- DHO’S (concentrating D going under)

Shooting was the biggest area of concentration during the summer of 2018 and the biggest improvement in Malik’s game in the 18/19 season.

  • Shooing is a META skill - it is the epicenter of the individual offensive skill set, if you can’t shoot your can’t score. Improvements here will have direct & indirect effects in every other skill.

Malik’s Shot Transformation

  • 2017/18: 28 made 3’s at 34.1%

  • 2018/19: 163 made 3’s (+482%) at 40.2% (+6.1)

^^ Led team with 163 made 3’s in 18/19.

During the 2018/19 season Malik was 1 of only 7 players to shoot over 40% from 3 on more than 5 attempts per game. This is the Volume + Accuracy category of shooters:

Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Buddy Hield, Brynn Forbes, Kyrie Irving, Danny Green and Malik.

Malik’s 17/18 vs. 18/19 Shooting Habits edit

 Changes to Malik’s Shot

Malik’s Hips; In the 17/18 season clips you’ll see a 90 degree hip rotation in Malik’s shot. Watching where his toes are pointed to start the shot and where they finish show the extent of this rotation. In the 18/19 season you’ll see Malik’s hips are a lot more “frozen” when he shoots.

Malik’s Shot Prep Footwork; In the 17/18 season clips Malik’s feet were “stuck in the mud”. He did not “DO HIS WORK EARLY” with his feet to be prepared to shoot the ball in rhythm and on balance.

Malik’s Power; Both of the previous changes helped the process of moving Malik’s power from being “loaded” in his knees to being loaded in his hips.

Finishing

During the 17/18 season Malik was very predictable finishing around the basket. Everything was a right hand finish and his footwork was always either 1-2 (outside- inside) or off two feet, which made it very easy for defenders to time up his finishes and block or disrupt them.

During the 18/19 season you’ll see that Malik is very comfortable finishing with either his left or right hand and his footwork is much less predictable. Malik will now finish strong or goofy foot and has almost completely eliminated two foot finishes from his game.

Attacking Closeouts

During the 17/18 season Malik exclusively saw “Dare you” to shoot closeouts, he was not comfortable enough shooting the ball to demand any other type of closeout. This kept the game from slowing down for him and also made it difficult to show off his athleticism attacking the basket downhill.

Step 1- Getting Malik’s shot to the level where he could punish these closeouts.

Step 2- Making sure once he started to get “Oh Shit” closeouts that he was ready to attack them with pump fake footwork’s, improved finishing footwork and handwork around the basket.

Dho’s

Same two step improvement concept as seen in closeout reads with attacking DHO’s:

Step one- raising the level of Malik’s shooting.

Step two- giving him a footwork (Skip Catch) that would not only put him in rhythm and on balance to shoot behind the DHO but also give him the option to attack downhill once defenders started to trail him in the DHO. He excelled in 18/19 operating out of DHO’s.
